Don't forget the one year only 1976 incarnation, 912e.

Is the 76 a fully galvanized body?

There are varying thoughts on why the 912e was built ranging from plugging the gap between the 914 and 924, US emissions, using up 914 engine parts bin and so on. Eitherway it was just built for 1 year with a production run 2099(I think), almost all are galvanised, mine certainly is although it does have the odd rust spot here and there.

Is it a 914 motor? I didn't know that. I just assumed it was made from old 356 parts like the 60's run. Is it fuel injected?

I didn't include the 76 912E because I don't consider that to be a true Porsche 912. It has a VW FI bus engine not the 616 engine as the 65-69.

Ain't seen one of those engines as standard in a VW bus before? Different unit all together. OK may have a VW derived bottom end but the heads are a Porsche development, larger valves, oval exhaust ports, different inlets spark plug location and so on.

Its basically a Porsche 914 motor with Bosch L Jetronic instead D Jetronic like most 914s have.

So what you're saying Duke is that in 1976 Porsche started making replica 912's?

Lets not become Porsche snobs here!!

The '76 912 came about for several reasons.

The 914 run was coming to an end, and Porsche had nothing to replace it.

Fuel prices were spiraling higher, so Porsche decided a 4 cylinder in a 911 body would be a good idea. They lifted the engine from the VW Bus/412.

Galvanized body, 911 all the way save for the engine bay. A one year classic was born.

See, I remember it all clearly. I was a 13 year old high school freshman in '76 and gobbled down car magazines with abandon.
