There is an entire forum for "912 outlaws" over at the 912bbs.org forum. They might know of someone with an engine, or have some ideas of what you can use as an alternative.

Not a problem. I just bought mine a few weeks back. I have found the 912bbs to be a great source of information, and very helpful as far as getting/finding parts goes.

Jake Raby is the man... no question. http://www.aircooledtechnology.com/Home_Page.htm

Then of course, there's the Subaru option...

Check out the 912 Registry BBS www.bbs912.org - look for the renegade section. There is an adapter made for 'baru engines to go into 912's... even WRX units. Yowser!

Take a look at www.thesamba.com, www.germanlook.com, www.shoptalkforums.com. all of these sites will give you some good background info on putting a 200 to 300hp subaru engine into a 912 or a VW. I bought a 68' 912 this year and I was going to put a 911 engine into it but the suby is very interesting. A rebuilt VW, type 4 or a 911 engine will easily be $2000 to 5000(and up). A low mile 300hp Suby is about $1200. The adverage cost of this conversion is about $2500. If you can do most of the work. A lot of people have already done it so the guess work on how to wire it is already done. If you just like building cars and want something different, you should check it out.
