Can I drive 912 without heater hoses, and other questions

Sorry these are scattered questions. I am making a long distance trip to purchase my new 912. I am confused on certain matters.

1. Can I drive a 912 without the heater hoses? I don't want exhaust fumes getting in, so would closing the valve by the seats prevent outside from getting inside?

2. What size is the allen on the gearbox drain and fill?

3. Anything I should replace before my long drive home?

4. Its an old car, would 15W-40 Shell Rotella be ok in it (at least I think its 15W-40). Or should I go for the straight 20W-50 oil because of the highway driving I am facing?

5. Give me some driving pointers, such as should I pull over from time to time to allow the old air cooled a chance to relax or just go as long as I want to go?

The Heater houses should be directed to the proper holes on the body to avoid the fumes for getting in the Cabin, in the Case of the Oil use the one that states the Owners Manual and if not the 15W-40 will be just fine . Check the Main Belt for Cracks and have a replace handy. How well is your spare tire ? Jack ? Tools?, Lights?. There is no necessity to pull over often to check the car you should check the Gauges for temp and Oil increases. I will stop only for Gas or Food and to take some photos to post in this Forum .

Have a nice Trip!!

A manual will help you with the basics....I suggest the "Orange" one.

Yes you can lose the hoses I have had them off my car for 2 years now a job I will do when I put in the orginal rebuilt engine. Just wear lots of coats if it's cold..;)

have a look on Gavins web site www.912register.co.uk if that doesnot work then change it for regisrty.co.uk he has loads of tips onthere for newie 912 owners it is on the site youu have to look for it.. I think he said 10/40 oil non sinthetic.. I up an dtill now have just been using straight 30. When the new engine is built I will move over.. no good putting modern oil in a 32 year old engine until it;s rebuilt as I worry about all the modern oil which hass cleaning properties cleaning the engine and clogging up the oil cooler not good...

any other tips you need drop in at www.ddk-online.com at the 912 section
