What to do about rust in longitudinals?
 

Hello all,
I have a '68 912 which am finally getting on the road. My question concerns the longitudinals, which I understand to be the curved underbody piece which forms the bottom of the rear wheelwell and appears to support the torsion bar. On my car, on the drivers side, the bottom, or span of the curve, is rotted away approx. 6-8", with the sides appearing solid. What is the appropriate repair for this? Is it terminal? Thanks in advance for responses.

It's not necessarily terminal, but you should have someone who knows these cars well take a look at it.

You can purchase replacement sections that can be used to replace the rusted out areas. Stoddard has them. This is an important area that has to be strong and correctly repaired. Unless this is something you have dome in the past and you have the equipment to do it yourself it is not a bad idea to have a pro do the work.
