I need alittle help on getting my carbs to stop leaking. I've done a bad thing. I let my "67" 912 sit for about 2 years. I've changed oil, and have cranked the motor but I just haven't driven it. I started her up last night and suprising enough, she fired up and sounded good except for the gas leaking from the carbs. So I turned her off and started to look for rebuild kits.
Point me in a direction on where to purchase a set of just gaskets or do I get a whole rebuild kit. Attached is a pic where they are leaking. Thanks for the help and it's probably just the beginning of my questions. ![]() The red arrow is pointing to the leak location. Does that gasket come with a rebuild kit?

Yes........ it is actually the pump diaphram itself. it will come with a `major` rebuild kit........sometimes not in a `minor` gasket kit. Be sure to inquire when ordering. Good luck Jeff

Prior to rebuilding, you can >>gently<< tighten the screws on the pump diaphram cover. Sometimes they just loosen up over time. Depends on how bad the leak is of course...

I just talked to ************* and they have them in stock but I need to know if it's a split shaft. How can I tell?
Thanks

The split would be in between the two barrels under the bowl. Follow the shaft from the accellerator pump (where your leak is) underneath the main part of the carb. If you feel a metal chunk there with a screw, it's a 'split-shaft' (stock on 68 and 69), if not it's a 'solid shaft', which should be stock on your car.
Jason (sorry - couldn't easily find a picture for you)

Thanks for your help. I'm going to try tightening the diaphram covers tonight and see if that does anything. I'm still going to order the kits tomorrow though. I want to take the carbs and give them a good cleaning
The only other thing I'll need to do is to get it to idle steadily. I'm not going to start turning all the screws and adjustments. The car was running good until it's last long rest so I'm thinking that I really shouldn't mess with that yet. Just get the fuel to stop leaking and idle OK and I'll run to the Porsche swap meet in Hershey next weekend and find some guru to help tweek it.

your guess is wrong. if you can position a mirror such that you can view the area under the pump assembly, perhaps you can tell. the duane spencer books indicates that the pump coverage can warp, and if it is, needs to be flat filed. but snugging up the screws may be enough.

Can someone tell form this pic? Solid or split?
![]() I learned a lot last night while cleaning the carb. Not as difficult as I thought. I was also able to get to the rear spark plug on that side. What the hells was idea of putting the plug in such a location? I finally got it though. Are there any tricks I didn't think of to make changing the plugs easier? Thanks

Solid...
If it's just been sitting, try tightening the screws (gently) all around. Otherwise, you'll have to pull them out and rebuild. Oh, wait. That picture's not showing it in the car, is it? :P Good luck! Jason

No, I pulled the left side, turned it upside down and brown mud dripped out!!!!!!!
With what I saw when I took it apart, I can understand why it wasn't running properly. Yes the screws on the vacume cover were lose. Nice to know now to keep and eye on things like that. Now I have to fix the leaky float issue. Can I drill a small hole oin the float, drain fluid and then seal or cover the entire float with an epoxy or something? I'm having trouble finding them. I'm glad I'm doing the work myself. Makes me feel closer to the machine and understand whats working and whats not. jpamental, thanks for you help ediamiam says I was wrong guessing it was solid and jpamental said it is solid................the answer is.............just to verify thanks

I think ediamiam was saying 'just don't guess - find the real answer'
It is a solid shaft setup (I have two sets - one of each). The float: Try calling Stoddard - they used to sell them and they weren't that expensive. If not, you have to find the leak by submerging it and look for bubbles. Drilling a small hole (best to do it on top) to empty out is ok also - you can seal the hole with a drop or two of super glue. That will close it up and not dissolve in the gas. I haven't tried it but I've read about others who have. Best to find a replacement, but you can try that in the meantime. You can use the super glue to seal up any other holes or cracks as well. Another possible source for parts - Parts Obsolete. You have to call - they don't have a parts catalog online anymore - but they have a TON of stuff. Jason
