New carbs?
A friend of mine has a 68 912 with Solex carbs. He has serious problems until the engine warms up (45mins). He is considering upgrading to anything that will solve his problem (Webers?). Any thoughts from the wise much appreciated.
Ps: here is a set on ebay -- would this work: thanks, Evren |

Solex's seem to be favored by hard-core Porsche gurus and officionados over Webers, however, Webers on their own right have a long-legacy in racing and street use. I switched to Weber 44 IDF's during an engine rebuild two years ago, and probably won't go back to my Solex's (which I still keep in a box). I think the "word on the street" is that Solex are more finicky and tricker to keep adjusted and tuned, since most people preface their praise for Solex's with the statement: "if you know what your doing, then Solex's are...."
Given the above, and given the fact that probably very few 912 owners are masters of adjusting and rebuilding Solex's, then there is nothing wrong or detrimental with going with Webers. I like the Weber 44 IDF and the intake manifolds since they result in more power. (i have a big bore kit and irratic cam, so the engine needs the additional fuel/air offered by the 44 IDF). |

I have both, Webers were the carb of choice a while back for replacement, but since I had a set of Solex's rebuilt by Harry Bieker I must say I'm very satisfied. The Webers took me a while to figure out, jetting was the issue for me. The Solex worked well right out of the box...minor adjustments of course, float settings are very important. If you can still by Webers a set will run $800.00 min. rebuilding the Solexs is similar in price. 44's have long been considered to big for the 356 or 912 engine but many like the fellow above seem to use them with other up grades... my engines are relativly stock, to each his own.

It turns out that my buddy had incorrect spark plugs -- after replacing them everything seems ok, so he's keeping the solex's.

evren, there is not much wrong with well set up solex's. I'm glad to hear he had the wrong plugs in. 45 mins is far too long to wait for an air-cooled engine to warm up.
