Pricing a 912 engine and tranny
Hello all,
I am looking for help evaluating a 68 912 motor and tranny for a good friend of mine. The engine is complete with tin, solex carbs, electrical, etc. The tranny is a 5 speed 902 transmission. Values to consider would be from core to good used. Thank you very much for your help ![]() Mike

Mike,
Could be all over the map depending on condition, when it was rebuilt (probably was at some point), who did the rebuild (reputable shop with documentation or PO - no necessarily bad, but good to know), when it was last run, etc. Recently a 5 speed transmission went for $300 in unknown condition - or $1500 to rebuild one. Engine parts for a rebuild on the engine alone could be $3500 or more just for the parts - full rebuilds from people like Duane Spencer are $8-10k. If you can post some more info it would help. Otherwise, if it's all in decent running condition, known compression/leakdown numbers I'd say low $2500 to high maybe $3500 or $4000. Again, without more info, those numbers are just ones I've seen floated around in the past few months when others have come up for sale. Jason

Thanks Jason, I will see about getting more info that you requested as time permits. This is basically a barn find that is dirty and was stored for many years. So far as I can tell it is not rusted or destroyed in any other way. The carbs will likely need a rebuild, though. My friend is wondering whether or not to sell as whole or to part it out. Any insight into this quesiton?

Well - if you can turn it over by hand (i.e. pistons not stuck) and do a visual inspection inside the case by removing the sump plate that will at least give you and your friend some clues. Then check to see if the heads are true 68 heads. For someone trying to be absolutely correct they would be a good find if in decent shape. However, 68 heads were mostly junk after 30,000 miles because of the smog equipment modifications, so most likely they're not the originals.
I'd say that selling the motor and the transmission together or as two items would be a good way to start - parting it out might be a lot more of a pain than it would be worth, especially with the whole thing in fairly unknown condition. All that said, if he want's me to just come take it off his hands I'll shoulder the responsibility to check it out myself ![]() Again, more info is better to help sort it out. But he can also take a shortcut and post a bunch of pics with it on eBay and just see what happens. It'd probably sell pretty easily. But if he wants it to go to a good home, posting info here and on http://www.912bbs.org are home to many avid 912 owners who are always on the lookout for stuff like this. Jason
