tachometer gone wild!!

My tach started dancing wildly back and forth today. Any thoughts as to repair or replace?

check the ground first and foremost.

if all the signal and ground wires are not corroded or broken, then contact North Hollywood speedometer and clock. they'll do a rebuild for about 200 bucks, with new glass and chrome bezel, and a reconditioned needle.

Check the points

This started happening to mine. The problem was a that the points had been gradually moving closer together and sparking(maybe because the cam on the distributor didn't have any grease and had been wearing the points). I found out when finally the car stopped when the points stopped opening. I realised the problem and set the point gap roughly and we got going again, with a steady RPM reading!

Your points could be too close and have been sparking or the condenser might be on its way out. Try checking the points gap / filing the points flat / changing the condensor or all of the above.

Hope this helps.

You are right! My points were closing gradually and when I reset them all was fine. I'm not sure why but the points seem to gradually close often. Its almost as if the screw that holds them cannot be tightened enough. I have ordered an Ignitor from Pertronix in hopes of eliminating future problems.
thanks again.

Wow! I actually got one right! I think it was the plastic bit that runs on the cam wearing down that made my points close up - I've put more grease on now.

Doesn't the elimination of future problems take the fun out of it! You can always look good in front of the wife if there's a problem with the points and you fix it en route!
