Anyone care to commit on the ballpark value of a 912 non sunroof coupe that I discovered and am trying to buy?

On the tag inside the drivers door on the A post, the serial # is 6 digits - 4560** and the 4 digit number below the SN is 660*. The car has been painted at least once but appears relatively rust free. There are some small rust bubbles at the right fender where it meets the door. The floor pan looks good. The engine looks original but I don’t know about #’s or if they match.

Just trying to get an idea of what to offer – what they are selling for.

Sooooo much depends on what you have there. Plus cars are selling for prices all over the place... I mean there is a car that a guy bought here on the forum for $2000 and I expected it to be a pile of *** and he has done a deal for a car that looks to be a GREAT!!!!!! little project car that will see him doing light repairs for years and not stuck into some huge resto just to get it to see some Tarmack....... one day..

Thanks for the posts and time - I know the question was vague.

Don't have pictures at this time. This car is a barn find of sorts and is fairly close by to me. Hopefully I will speak with the owner this week and get some more info on condition. Overall the car does not look to bad. I know it needs a good clean up and time / money spent on overhauling carbs / fuel system, brake overhaul, the rubber around the doors, etc. looks tired. The engine looks original but I do not know the details. I only know that the car has not moved in over a year. I am thinking that the owner might just be tired of it. There is no reason to think that it does not run as it was driven to it's present spot.

Turns out the owner was asking $9000. The car is a driver at best. From looking at it, it needs door alignment, all rubber, minor body work to prevent rust, interior work and a few other things. It has sat outside for the last 2 years without being driven. The owner says the engine was rebuilt within 3 years and that the mechanicals are all good.

I offered $2500. The basic problem is that they paid too much for the car and are now trying to sell it for close to what they paid. It will sit for some time until they realize what they can get for the car.

It will probably never be for sale at a price that will interest me.

Alas, Bert, your observations will no doubt come true. The car will sit and sometime in the future - be passed on to some member in the family who really never wanted a Porsh (sic). It will be nearly given away. Perhaps the car will escape the torch but it will be a matter of timing. It will go the way of a B24 Liberator. If the car is located close to you, stay in touch - one never knows - but it will take a family event to shake the car loose at a reasonable and realistic price. You have a charge - stay vigilant – I hope for history’s sake you preserver.

Your take is correct, in this case that is how it probably will work - saddly a family event and not a happy one either. The owners are older (hmmmm about my age, damn it!). They are not car people and know little to nothing about these cars. From talking to them, my take is that they bought the car on a whim a few years ago, enjoyed it for a summer and then it sat, after it was preecived to have had a small problem.

They bought it from a local shop know for over pricing.

But it is close, about 200 yards as the crow flies form my front door. I see it when I walk my dog. I am patient, if nothing else. I have been watching it for almost 2 years and just a couple of weeks ago approached the owners about selling it.

I have a 356 and a 911. If I am eventually successful at buying it I might put the engine in my 356 (if it is in fact in good shape and needing only freshning), drive it as is for a while, put a 6 in it - who knows.

About 20 years ago (gads? Was it really?) I was looking for another 69 912 for Terri, my wife. I understood a 912. I ran into many many cars chopped up with rust and other aberrations who were touting them as great cars. We live NW of the Los Angeles impact zone so we had many chances each weekend. One 1969 912 was actually a 69 911T that had the oldest 912 engine I had ever seen – complete with solid rear mount. We ended up finding a 71T in better shape than our 912 for 5500. I put another 100,000 on it, changed out the motor eventually – still have it – and now it is getting painted. Viva long hood LWB. The 912? Concoured it, won class in San Diego and Portland and sold it – it was time. A fellow bought it as his first Porsche and was happy until he drove an 85 Carrera – he sold the car to a collector. Haven’t seen it since. Alas. Movin’ on, heh heh

It amazes me that someone will let one of these cars rust away or deteriorate mechanically from sitting because they are so entrenched in a value that rusts away every day. I have been attempting to buy an early 4 screw horn grill 912, that was cut up and hit on the drivers side with a bad fix and bad paint, that sits under a rotten blue tarp at the side of the house, because the owner took it in trade for a debt and won’t sell it for less than the debt.

I guess there is value in the rust?
