Parts car 912 need to start motor no key

Hi I bought a parts car 912 and want to start the motor but no key. I connected 12v to the + side of the coil and crossed a couple wires on the ignition switch and the motor turned over but could not get any spark. Does that mean it is a bad coil or am I hooking this up wrong? Any help would be great. Thanks Andy awilco@hotmail.com | ||

				912 no key start

hey Andy - you dont say what year your 912 is but in my '69 I could start it almost as fast without the key as I could with it. Scary eh? Look under the dash - note the key switch. Note among other things some big fat red wires and a yellow one. Find the hot fat red wire - pull the other one off and attach it to this hot one. On my ignition switch it actually had an empty spade for this!! Then, make sure car is out of gear, take the yellow wire (starter) and touch the either of the two red wires. Should start. Also, if you have a 69, there may be a spare yellow wire in the engine compartment electrics mess on the left hand side - that too is the starter. Touch any hot red wire. Good for timing and when installing a fan belt - on the later, you dont want to crimp the belt and bend the generator shaft - heh heh. Doug
