912E Question
 

Hello,
I am looking at a 76 912E. Can anyone tell me what the serial number range is for the 912E. Trying to determine if this is the original engine or not.

912600**** the last four digits upto 2099 I think

Thanks, but what I am lookng for is the engine serial number sequence. I think it is 406.0xxx is that the same as the 914 engine?

Should be 4060021 to 4062115 if the book I have is right.

As far as I know , and I have seen several Ees , and checked their engine numbers....

The real E engines do not have the engine number stamped on the engine block at all !!! The number place there is empty. Instead of that , it is stamped on the fan shroud.

And It starts with a "star" and then six numbers , or was it seven.... and another "star" at the end.

You're right eki912, I couldn't find an engine number on mine at all (on the crankcase) could only find the one on the fan shroud

Yes , so it seems , engine numbers are not there.
Which actually is a pretty easy "tool" determining if you have a real 912E engine inside yourcar !

Honestly, I wouldn't be concerned about whether your 912E has the original engine. They aren't really collectible, so you'd be better off making an assessment about the condition of whatever engine IS in your car. I'd much rather have a 912E with a well sorted out 73 914 2.0 (or, geez, a nice Raby motor) than a stock 912E motor with questionable internals unless you've got a car with like 8k original miles and you're planning on showing it for its unusual originality.

NONE of the "E" engines I see have case numbers as stated above.... We build more "E" engines than anyone in the US by a longshot, I did 7 last year!

Jake, I stand corrected. I knew what #'s Dan was looking for but forgot to add that the #'s were not on the case, but rather, the cooling shroud.
The # is left of the air pump. This is "my" engine that made it's way to No.Carolina in another E. It was swapped into this car from another and I was crazy enough at the time to ask if I could get the original fan shroud back so it would be "matching #'d". I thought about it a while and realized that these cars engines get swapped, rebuilt, sold all the time, was an E ever going to appreciate enough to be concerned with having the correct #'d shroud?
