six digit VIN

Hello, just purchased a 1967 912. I was doing a little research last night and it seems that all the other 912's from this era have an 8 digit VIN. Why is mine six? Thank you!!!

My reference lists the following for 1967 model year:

Porsche Body: 354001-355601
Karmann Body: 458101-463204
Targa: 550001-550544

It seems that 1969 started the longer numbers.

thank you, pardon my ignorance but what does the 'Karmann Body' signify?

A different plant close to Porsche in Stuttgart, that under Porsche, produced the same body's needed for delivery.
