Risk of running without engine apron tins?

My little brother just bought a '67 912 and he's trying to get it on the road. It doesn't have the apron tins that surround the engine, but does have the cooling tins. Can he run the car this way?

I figure, he'll be on the highway, the blower tins are there, the engine should stay relatively cool. Any thoughts or previous experience?

It could and probably will run hotter than normal, the engine is designed to have all it's tin........

Adam Reed from Ashland runs his with zero tin and runs great, so great he has 470, 000 miles on the car and third engine. Not bad. Ashland is cooler than the bay area, but he drives his old gal every day without a hick up.

engine tin

Excess heat mean a loss of horsepower and increase wear and tear. Engine tin shrouding is cheaper than a rebuild. Jim '59 A Coupe race car

Yeah, I'm not a believer in running with out stock set up, just pointing out that you won't go blind running hot, simply run your carbs richer;-) And when you find the right tin, pop her in, meanwhile have fun driving.
