1968 912 tranny

Hello there,
I just picked up a 68 912.
The issue is the tranny. When I'm in 1st or 2nd there is a slight grinding noise when I'm on the gas. When I let off it goes silent.
Now I've heard that this is common but I'm pretty concerned about it.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!
Mike

Sounds like worn bearing(s) for the shaft that holds 1st/2nd. The fact that the noise is under load only suggests a bearing problem. Others here will know far more than I about transmissions. I would probably just live with it until it gets worse or effects the operation of the tranny. However, I suppose that approach could lead to additional damage. Like I said, others will know more.

Check the fluid, mine was low and causing noise. Under load noises indicate definite bearing problems though. However you can pull the top plug and just double check that you have fluid.

Well, I went for a ride and changed the fluid with no result
Looks like I may have a problem here.
Thanks for the responses!
Any tips or suggestions?
I've never opened up a tranny before.

Messing with a tranny is pretty serious work. However, having a pro do it is pretty expensive.
You might pose your question and ask for advice on the 911 board. There is a lot more action there and both cars have the same transmission. I also suggest a search on 914world.com. I think there is a thread on dealing with transmission internals. 914's also have the same trans.

With the necessary info the 912 tranny is a piece of cake and almost any weekend mechanic can do the job.

Search for 901 tranny info and buy a book that has the tranny details.

Here are the important things that you need to know so you don't screw it up.

One- Measure all the gasket thickness of the gaskets seperating various parts of the tranny. They are very important and the new gasket must be exactly the same thickness or the ring gear will howl.

To disassemble, use a brass hammer and just tap tap tap tap to get things apart. No press is required. Remember and take notes on how this thing came apart.

A fixture is helpful to reassemble the gears, but not necessary. Cost is small so buy one from pelican or whereever you can find it.

NO magic, anywhere in one of these trannys, just lots of bucks in parts.

Any bearings can be replaced for about $5 ea if you look hard enough, for 5x that ammount if you buy Porsche stuff. I suggest the jap stuff. Better quality, less expensive.

Thanks for the response!
I think this is exactly what I'll do... I'll pick up another 1 and drop it in, then tear into this 1.

Would this simply be misaligned shift linkage? I understand that out of adjustment makes it hard to shift into some of the gears but would it also make noise while driving in gear?

Snowman,
I found out that one of my bearings was getting bad. Mainshaft bearing for 1st gear etc...
Would you happen to know where I might find one of those for a good price?
Thanks!
Mike

Garage
Think they have them here, but not cheap. You could buy a 914 with a decent transmission and flip the ring and pinion maybe?
