912 Questions
I recently purchased a 67 912. The car has been setting since 1979 (the last year it was tagged). In looking at what needs to be replaced, the air cleaners seem to be some sort of wire mesh. Not much filtering ability. Are there pleated or oiled filters available for the Solex carbs? Does someone make an electronic replacement for the points (Pertronix, or ?)? The 67 does not have the dual master cylinder. Does anyone make an adapter kit, or is there a thread about how to use the later model master cylinder? Thanks for your help.

You can get a Petronix kit for the distributor or have yours restored. You can also get a more modern-curved unit from CSP in California.
Does your car have the air horns for the air cleaners? If so, you can replace your mesh filters with round paper ones from Mahle. Can't remember much about the dual MC, but I *think* you can replace it. Go to the 912bbs website and ask around. |
Several sources have air filters , ************* and Pelican has pieces, mainelycustombydesign.com has nice high end systems , classicandspeedparts.com/ is a good source for upgrades, I believe they have the dual cylinder master cylinder, air cleaners and the Petronix ignition; go for it.......

i thought you were putting a 911 engine in the 912?

We are now going to fix the car for our son to drive. He is 14 and we hope to have the car ready by the time he is old enough to drive. The executive comittee has decided that it would not be a good idea to have a teenager driving antthing with a 911 engine in it. The 911 swap has been postphoned for a few years.

priced at $57K and selling it are two very different things. Let the young man have some fun.

Our 912 is not running. It was last tagged in 1979. It has been setting since then. Unfortunately, it has some rust. The rocker panels will have to be replaced and there is some rust in the front. I need to order panels to replace the rusty ones. My son, Luke, is learning a great deal about cars and how to repair them from this project. He is quite excited about making a running car out of this project. Good male bonding time.
We are slowly making progress. The 912 is such a cool looking car. I also have a 72 911 in which I put a 3.2 with Motronic. I really like the early Porsches. |
I think it's great you and your son are working on it. My dad and I plucked old Beetles and Karmann Ghia's from fields and put them back on the road back when I was 12 years old and we're still doing it for fun. The bonding and memories are far more valuable than the monetary value. Each car has its place and it sounds like your 912 is right where it should be... Here's a picture of my 2 year old. My father, my self and my son all worked on this 300TD together. We love this stuff!

Hey Tom the M/C from a 70 is a dual circut and it will bolt right in you of course need to replumb things but it should work fine. If you are going to change the brake calipers to something bigger a Mercedes Benz 23mm master cylinder will work as well.
There are some pleated filters available, I will get the name and send it to you. |
These part numbers are for the Master Cylinders, the porsche number is a 19mm and the ATE number is a 20.5mm
part# 901.355.012.04(Porsche) 3.2120-3901.3(ATE) |
If your still looking for air filters to replace the wire mesh ones, try K&N. They make a good quality replacement.

solex carb covers
Tom, I have a 65 912 with wire mesh air cleaners. I contacted outerwears.com and had them special make a set of outercovers for the Knect air cleaners. They should be able to set you up. I dont have the part number here, but if you are interested, or need, let me know. They will keep out most anything and not affect the air flow. Cost is very reasonable, and available in a variety of colors for, under $20. good luck
