I have a chance to get a 912...Many ?'s

I have a chance at a 912 that is disassembled and has been sitting for 10+ years. I have not seen it, as I am in Iowa and it is in the San Fran area. Here it goes with the questions:
1st, what is a fair value range of a 1966 912 in this state assuming it is in relatively rust free condition and complete.
2nd Would it be horrible of me to put a 911 2.7 engine in it?
3rd, What is involved in making that conversion?
Lastly, is there anyone out there in the SF area who might be willing to check it out for me? The plus for them is if I pass, I would let them have 1st crack at it.

Thanks
I'm sure I'll have more questions as this proceeds.

Ask the questions here: www.912bbs.org. You'll get a lot more play.

As for putting a 2.7 motor in it, if the 912 is a good car, why make it something less valuable. A good 912 is just like any good Porsche. It deserves to be preserved. If it's a pile, have at it.

Far away projects

Why are all the good projects always far away?

Be careful, just the transportation/title issues might make for a big $ problem, let alone getting a "surprise" delivered.

Forums are full of surprise deliveries; seller fraud, buyer didn't investigate, shipper hurt it, seller's "minor issues" are buyer's "fraudulent misrepresentation", tough to resolve long distance.

Research the physical issues for that model, get as many pictures as you can, research market value and what it will take to transport and "fix it up". The old adage is that you can buy someone's dream cheaper than you can build yours.

Unless you have a special friend, its hard to imagine someone else in the area hasn't found the jewel.

Now, there's a Cessna in a barn up in Iowa if you could just take a quick look for me...:-) Skip

thanks, those are all good points. The car is involved in a sort of family dispute, that is why no one has found it. Oh and by the way, my father is a retired Beechcraft dealer, if you really want someone to check out the Cessna, I'm sure we could arrange that.

I'm right outside SF if you want someone to take a look, and I should be in town over the 3 day weekend coming up.
