Ok.........It's leaking at the flywheel

I need some advice..........I have about 3k miles on my rebuild it was done in '98( 1967 with a big bore kit and Weber's, but a stock cam )..............I never drive it.......Business has kept me to busy...........I started it the other day, after letting it sit for 11 months and it's leaking .........allot. It appears to be in the clutch area.........my guess the main seal. Well I need the expert advice of this forum..........If it is the main seal.......can it be replaced without splitting the case?
I'm a self fixer..........but I've never attempted anything as major as this. Help !
What am I looking at, as far as engine removal and repair ?
Any special tools required, is the seal an available part ? I'm feeling, I don't know what I'm feeling..........it's breaking my heart.........I love this car. I've spent all my spare time racing my Go karts and neglecting my 912.
Come on and make me feel better and tell me it's not that big a thing......

Dave:
Not too big a deal. Drop the motor, pull the flywheel, pull the old one and tap in a new one. Just make sure when you pry out the old one you work very slowly and avoid putting any nicks in the case. There is an installation tool for this, but if you work very slowly putting the new one in (keeping it flat) by gently tapping it with some wood, you'll be okay.
When you say it's leaking a lot, if I put a clean pan under the car and you left it running (hot motor) , approx. how much oil would I see in 10 minutes? A teaspoon? More?
Also, how long did you run the motor? Did the motor ever leak before you stored the car?
Bill.

Thanx for the quick reply. I feel much better !.........I'll try and make the time to attempt the repair, in a couple months........The trans needs work, it never like shifting into 5th gear and it needs syncros.
I guess I'll have to budget the $$ for the trans repair, and do them both at the same time since the engine will be out. The seal I'll attempt, but the trans work will have to be done by a pro.
Any recommendations for a shop to do the trans ? I'm in the San Gabriel Valley / Pasadena area.

Thanx Again for the info...... Dave

oil

make sure you look at the sealing surface of the flywheel, it may be worn, with a grove around the circumference of the area where the seal rubs.
