1967 912 is running great...
I have bombarded this list with many questions over the past few months. My son and I bought a 67 912 last Fall. It had not been tagged since 1979. The tires were flat, the brake pads had rusted to the disks and the engine would not turn.
After many hours of work (and a few$$) it is running well. We rebuilt the front end, brakes and replaced the bushings with new as well as putting new Koni shocks on the front and rear. We rebuilt the fuel pump and carbs and replaced the distributor cap, points, rotor, condenser, wires and coil. We took the carbs off for a second time and cleaned them out again. We were still having trouble getting the car to idle. I took the distributor (Bosch 022) off and cleaned it and oiled the advance mechanism. The car now idles correctly and runs great. I am very glad to get the car to drive so well without having to rebuild the engine or transmission (it has 84K on the odometer). Thanks for all your help!!!! Tom the Happy Driver |

running great!
Congratulations Tom,
These are great cars and one of the things that makes them so good is they are easy to work on. ENJOY. joe '64 356C '68 912 |

Curtissa,
Ironically you should ask...I just noticed one of my shocks is showing a little moisture. I'm assuming this means I have to replace them also. In looking thru the Performance Products catalogue I see that the Boge (which my car came with) are NLA. I have not researched which shock will work and am also looking for information and advise. I did figure out how to adjust the play in my rack and pinion though....it made a night and day difference in a shimmy my frontend had developed (and REALLY noticed with the wider tires I installed!!). Theres a cover plate with two mounting holes. Remove it and underneath you'll see what appears (for lack of better words) to be a gear. The cover plate has two dogs which engage with these teeth. Use it to tighten (clockwise) this gear. In my caes it only took a small amount of adjustment. I was very pleased with this simple solution. I'll keep researching shocks...let me know if you (or anyone) find anything. joe '68 912 '64 356C '63 356 shell awaiting a decision as to "how to" proceed!

Your shocks are designed to lose 10 to 15% of its` oil over its` lifespan. A bit of moisture is not a big deal. If the seal leak is `very` wet or making a big mess then I`d replace them. It takes a big leak ( 20 to 30% ) to reduce the fluid dampening capabilities.

Thanks Jeff,
Thats great to know....they didn't seem to give an indication of being worn out. Another testament to a great car....275,000 miles and still working!! When (if ever) I do replace them, what would you recommend? |

You can`t beat Konis. Yes , you can pay more for Bilsteins with their `lifetime` guarentee etc but Konis are a great choice. I`ve sold Bilsteins and Konis for years using both in my personal cars and for the price I will buy the Konis everytime. I have them on my 68 912 and am perfectly happy with them.
