Carb. choices?

Why replace original Solex's with Webers when for about the same price you can have the Solex carbs remanufactured (not rebuilt)?
Just curious as to the pro's and cons experienced by others.
Thanks in advance for your input.

Bieker (sp) Does an excellent job. However, you need to take them apart and blow them out when you get them back. He doesn't rebuild them and there can be a lot of medal shavings loose inside. I know that Parts Obsolete uses him.

I agree with you as long as the Solexes or Webers are calibrated correctly it is a toss up. I have Webers on my '66 912 and had Solexes on my '69 912. One could not tell the difference. Jim

carb choices

Thanks Jaems. I should have clarified in my intitial post. I did send my Solex to Bieker Engineering. He did a great job. I followed his mounting and set up instructions and have had no problems. The only draw back was it took about 10 weeks (he was upfront about about the turnaround time). Fortunately here in Vermont I don't drive my 912 in the winter!

Thanks also Jim...I've often wondered if there was a noticeable difference in performance.

Most folks do not have their Webers set up for the 912. Right out of the box they are set up for the VW, the venturis, jetting, and etc are all wrong. Through the years most folks have left them as such. I found that once you sort them out, for your motor. They will give more performance than the Solexes. On a chassis dyno I picked up about 16 hp and 30 lbs of torque to the rear wheels. Again this was for my particular setup. Even a Porsche trained motor builder that built racing team motors, from 356's to 908's, was surprised at the Weber performance on the 912. However, it took us a few months to sort them out. I also have a euro car.
