Relay for cooling fans (external oil cooler)
I have a '68 912 and am preparing to attach to and wire up two SPAL cooling fans (2 x 3.6 Amps) on my external oil cooler in the rear engine compartment. The oil cooler itself (Mocal, 11" x 5.5") is bolted to the rear engine mount cross-bar (via brackets), and its surface faces the engine compartment air vents on the compartment door.
There is a relay that I need to hook up. What would be the best place to hook up the relay to ground and battery power? (whether I use a thermostat or manual switch to turn on the fans is academic -- what's important is where I tie in). Also, I am not asking about e.g. optimal temperature etc., since thermostatically controlled triggers can be obtained for which fan speed (i.e., load) and temperature threshold can be set. Mainly, I am interested in where to tie in to ground and hot in the engine compartment for cooling fans. Thanks. lep |

Why didn't you just install it up in the front fender. There you would not need the fans. It would get enough air through the horn vent. It would then leave the engine compartment cleaner and easier to work on the engine. I hope you didn't connect it to where the original oil cooler was connected. That is the wrong place. The original oil cooler should still be installed. There is a plate down by the oil presser cover that can be replace that is made for a external oil cooler or/and a full flow oil filter. Will at Classic Speed Parts has them.

I didn't want hyper-extended oil lines running to the side fender or in the front fender, or water/rocks/debris/mud near the cooler or coming in contact with a protective covering over the cooler. Yes, there is a plate over the original orifices where the original oil cooler was. The lines come out of the timing cover near the oil pump. The lines are high quality with stainless braid, and racing heat shield wrap over them near the headers, all of which is from Hoerr Racing Parts located in the heart of racing shops in Indianapolis (did I miss something?).
Again, please suggest the appropriate tie in location for the relay's hot and ground. This is an electrical post. thx, lep |

Yes you did. However, you will find it out someday down the road. The relay will go between your switch and the fans.
