Passenger Side Mirror

I decided I wanted a rear view mirror on the passenger's side. I have seen pictures of these on other 912s, and there were access plugs on the dooe in the same location as the drivers door.

So I picked up a matching Durante mirror, traced a a template to insure the locations were the same on each door, made sure everything lined up like I thought it should. The holes I drilled line up right in the center of the access plugs and I installed the mirror. Perfect...........however, I can't see anything from the drivers side.

Could it be the mirror on the passenger's side is located for the passenger? If your are in the passenger's seat the mirror is functional. From the drivers side, nada.

Any thoughts or experiences related to this? I'm stumped and I rarely have the opportunity to ask "how does is look on your side? Thanks

dgsaz:
There have been a few discussions of this in the past. IMO, the "passenger side" mounting holes are there for cars exported to right-hand drive markets. I've seen an early ad listing a Talbot mirror option, but have yet to see a factory photo or mention of dual Durant mirrors.
Either way, it'll give the passenger something to look at and certainly doesn't hurt the looks of the car.
Bill.

Is it so far out that you cannot recover a little usage, if you stick on one of those big fisheye mirrors?...Mark

you'll notice later models like the SC that came with a passenger mirror scooted back to make it visible from the driver side.
i opted for the talbot 333 which keeps the mirrors symmetrical and still only allows me to see enough to know if someone is riding at my quarter panel.

passenger mirror

As Bill mentions, the mirror mounted on the passenger door is located assymetrically to the drivers door mirror to enable the driver to use it for rearward vision.
In addition to this, I also replaced the mirror with convex mirror glass - bought a universal fit piece from the local auto parts store and had a glass shop cut it to the correct shape. Works great. Here in NZ, we are required by law to have a mirror on both sides of the vehicle (even if it wasn't originally fitted with two!)
Hope this helps.
