'66 912 - possible purchase???
I am considering the purchase of a mostly original '66 912 with 105K original miles. The car was repainted in the early 1970s after some minor body damage. Car fires right up when cold, no smoke and no oil drops that I can detect. The seller is asking around $8K for the car. The problem I see is the rust that can be seen in the pictures below. Would you (or should I) consider this car at this price?
*EDIT* I forgot to mention that motor/carbs completely rebuilt 500 miles ago. Check under the battery and if it is solid then it is not too bad from the pictures. The worst area that you show is the floor boards.. If they have not rusted through then the rust can be stopped there and the other places. If the rest of the car is solid then the price is fair. If that is their asking price. Then they will probably take a little less if you offer them cash.

Thanks Jaems. Could you please let me know what is involved in the potential repair of the drivers floorboard assuming that it is not rusted through?

Rust is a real killer if you can't fix it yourself.....check this one out, if it hasn't already sold,

Take an ice pick with you and really have a very thorough look at the floor, do not be afraid to poke around the pedal cluster and remember rust is like an iceberg, there is always more that is not seen.
However if you can weld and it has not rusted through then you probably could enjoy driving it until winter at which point you could replace he floors. |

Yep the wheels are worth a substantial part of the price of the car probably $3K minimum. If refinished (for under $200 a pop) you could ask $5K. Search over on the early S site. If you want to put steelies on you could realistically get them for less than $1K and put the savings back into the car to fix the rust issues. Something to consider SmileWavy

scott, if i have the opportunity in france, i have a reflection by this wheels only and for parts for my 66 or OUTLAW project....but not for 8k US.....( for me, the return in europe is not free ! :D )
I'm OK with "kilodawg"...... if we search a clean car without work ( metal and rusty ) it's not for you.....if you have a low budget, i think it was difficult under this price ( 8k ) and yes, looking in 912bbs, regularly, the great opportunity is online....the 69 red coupe is nice.... good luck Jean-luc |
Glad I passed on the '66
After spending about 6 weeks of searching the current stock of available 912s, I found and bought this car. So far I am really happy with the purchase!

The wheels on the silver car appear to be 4.5X15, which are the original and first Fuchs offered on the 67 911S. Since they're very rare their price has skyrocketed and a company called Flat4 makes repops of these wheels.
Like many here, I was around when these wheels first came out on the 67S. Many Porsche owners at the time laughed at them. They were only painted around the lugs and were unpolished. It wasn't uncommon for S owners to swap these for chromes or painted steel wheels. Their present value is related to the value of an all-original 67S. This was also the case with the later Mahle "gas burner" wheels - IIRC lightest of them all, but in the 70's could be found stacked up in back yards or on VW's. There was a time when Porsches were intentionally plain, understated cars and at least one book states that Ferry himself had only chrome/hubcapped wheels on his personal drivers. Don't get me wrong - if I currently had a 67S, I'd shop the world for a set of 4.5's, since they're required for a complete restoration. The more common 6x15 (hearts, etc.) and 14" 911E/912E wheels bring considerably less money, but the 1968 Fuchs (5.5x15?) seem to be on the $$$ rise. Then there are the 911R wheels but that's a book of its own. Bill. BTW that's a great looking 68 SWT - congrats on the purchase. |
