1966 912 questionable acceleration

I recently encountered problems with my 912 under accelerating conditions. The car idles fine and runs well around 60 mph with only slight missing; however, pulling away from a stop sign results in much clutch feathering and smoke. Recently replaced (last six months): points, wires, plugs, condenser, cap, generator, and voltage regulator. I replaced the fuel filter and checked the fuel pump with positive results. I also went through the carbs because I noticed excess fuel accumulation on the outside of the driver side unit and checked for warping where the carb bolts to the intake manifold. Everything seemed fine. Today I removed the points and inspected the advance for funtionality. Again, everything appears to be ok. One final note, the car was running fine on Wednesday, started to act funny on Thursday afternoon, and barely made it home on Friday. Any advice on what may be causing the porblem would be great.

Thanks
Brian

You didn't say if you adjusted the valves. Valve adjustment is very critical on a 912 engine. Also you may of picked up a speck of dirt in the jets. When you said that you went through the carbs. Did you disassembled them cleaned everything, reassembled, and adjusted them?

Another thing that will cause a lost of power. If one of the brakes is hanging up.

Brian:
First check the float-needle valve (needle and seat) on the carb that was wet on the outside. All of this can be done with the carb on the car. Pull the top off, then carefully remove and clean the needle valve. While you're there, make sure that the float itself isn't leaking. Pull the 2 plugs on that side and clean them up as they've probably been in an extremely rich environment for a while.
Hope this helps,
Bill.

How much fuel did you have in the tank? Sometimes when its very low you can end up scavenging the dregs which get caught in the tiny holes in the carbs.
