porsche 912 transmission/linkage help
Not sure if you guys can help but... I have a 67 porsche 912 that has been great for about 1-1/2 years. I don't drive it a lot but it nice to get and go. Well I went to get in a go and everything was fine for the first couple of miles then.... I thought I heard something in the back like something was leaking.. (not completely sure) and then I noticed I couldn't shift the car anymore. I managed to put it into third and crippled home. The clutch goes in and out fine with normal pressure. I now can't get the shifter out of third gear. Any thoughts? Linkage adjustment? Something else? Don't tell me it's the transmission... please! BTW, there isn't any dripping so I doubt it was leaking....
Thanks, Jim

There is a inspection plate for the linkage in the rear hump. If the coupler has slipped then that would keep you from getting it into gear. Also how sloppy was the shifting before? There is also nylon cups and rings that can go out with the linkage. The transaxle is the same as a 911 and the early cars had a weak shaft. Which was replaced as the transaxles were rebuilt with a updated one. Some have never been rebuilt and which yours may be the case.
You might try the 912bbs. Sterling and some others work on 912's for a living. |

I found the 912 bb after I posted here. Yes, the shifter was extremely loose. I will check it out. Thanks for your help!

if you change those worn parts I think you'll be quite pleased.... might want to check the rubber boot from chassis to transaxle, a good time to change that too if it's worn out

Excellent Advice
Jim,
You are getting some excellent advice. I agree replace the nylon bushings under the shifter and the bushings in the aluminum shift coupler that connects the transmission to the shift rod assembly. I would like to add one other thing that was not mentioned. Do not re-use the pointed bolt that is installed in the aluminum shift coupler. Order a new one from Pelican. The new ones have a nylock material imbedded in the screw. You are lucky you didn't lock your car's transmission in between two gears requiring a wrecker. I did this in my 74 911 three times before I discovered that the shift coupler was moving around. I was told I needed a new intermediate plate in my transmission when all that was wrong was a loose shift coupler. Henry |

Henry:
He might still have his original pointed setscrew which is safety wired in place. |

I do still have the original setscrew with wire in place. I still haven't solved this issue. I disconnected the coupler to see if the shifter wasn't working. Well, the shifter moves freely. The shaft in the back moves side to side about an 1/8" which doesn't seem too bad. Any ideas on what next to try? I'm not getting a lot of bites on the 912 page so I figured I would try here again. How do I access the shaft that goes from the coupler to the transmission? Can this be a fluid level issue? Where to I check for fluid on this car? Desperate questions for desperate times! Thanks
