Lightbulb Petronix ignition

Hi guy's,

Need some information about Petronix replacment electonic ignition. Have many of you guys fitted it? did it work?. I'm down here in Australia where it hasn't really taken off yet. What sort of coil did you run? resistance?

I've got a similar system, Compufire in 2 aircooled engines and let me tell you they are great! Start up is instantaneous and runs smooth as silk. Definitely recommended. I use a Bosch Blue coil.
Try it, you'll like it.

Thumbs up

I've used Petronix on 3 cars; a 356A & B & a 912E all with stock coils. They work great. I think the main advantage is that once you've set the exact timing, it stays there - even if there's a little distributor wear, etc. Since I'm a skeptic @ heart, I admit to keeping the points & a feeler gauge in the glove box for a year but never needed them. Give it a try - makes timing/points one less thing to dink around with.

For the 912 you'll need Petronix partnr:1847V
I fitted it in a 050 distributor and nothing but improvements and easy to install!
Make sure the primary coil has minimum 1.5 ohms of resistance.
No problem normally with a blue bosch coil but check to make sure.
Note that the rotor with the magnets which slides over the cams in the distributor pushes the "rotating finger" a bit higher. You may need to file off a bit from the finger base to make sure it seats properly.

I just ordered a Pertronix from Pelican for 65.95. If you're looking in the catalog I think it was in the 914 section. That's the cheapest price I found. I ordered last Friday and it finally shipped today so you might have to wait a little.

I had a weird intermitten drivablity problem that turn out to be vertical play in the dizzy, causing the Compufire to act strange. I replaced it with points and the problem was gone. I am sticking with points. Steve

I'm with Steve and Damon. I never used the petronix system and didn't need too. I think the problem is that people think the system will solve all of their problems when in reality the engine just needs to be tuned. My 912 started right up, idled beautifully, ran smooth, and never missed a beat, when tuned up. And once you tune it up properly, it will continue to run well for a long time. Also, points take a while to go bad. And changing them is a snap. And their cheap!

A petronix ignition system will not prevent the need of a tune-up, but a tune-up will prevent the need of a petronix ignition system.
