Question Wheel size 912E

I'm thinking about putting new Fuchs wheels and tires on my 1976 912E to replace the 15" Porsche phone dials that are on them now. Most of the Fuchs that are available seem to be 6" x 16" in the front and a 7" x 16" in the rear. My question, will the 7" rear wheel fit the 912E chassis or will it be too wide?

Any suggestions/comments would be more than welcome.

7's should fit in the back, no problem. I even run them on the back of my 68 912 (early body, post 68 cars are wider to accomidate more rubber) with no rub. I don't think you can go wider than 215 width rubber, but I may be wrong.

John,

I also own a 76 912E. Earlier this year I installed 6 x 16 and 7 x 16 Chromed Fuchs w/205x55 potenzas. I had to "roll" the fender lips to avoid tire damage/rubs. The final height is approx 25 1/4" measured from level ground to center of fender lips. I wouldn't recommend going any wider than the above tire. Let me know if you need any details on rolling the fenders....

I have 16x7 on mine but it has the SC flared rear fenders. They are welded in and makes the car look like the 911 thru '89. I have seen a 911 with rolled fenders. This is done by bending the inside lip of the fender around further under to provide clearance. Depending on the ride height of your car it may or may not work. If stock height it will, if lowered it will not. Measure your height before deciding. Good Luck.

JohnS,

Send me your telephone number via e-mail and I will explain what the "fine" art of rolling the fender lips is. I would hate to hear that you crushed the fender lips by using a baseball bat (that most recommend) while a few friends "bounce" the bumper. Also, the height that I settled on was approx what I read in the Excellence Tech notes supplement as the "Euro" spec for early 911"s. For a moment, I contemplated adding the SC flares however, my tuner talked me out of it simply due to the fact that it is a drastic change that may negatively impact the value of the vehicle. Consequently, I am looking for a 78-82 911 SC to add to my inventory.

Regards

Bob
