I remember you said you where going to go look at a 912 yesterday. How did it turn out?

Greetings! I am the proud owner of a 1965 (not 1966) Porsche 912 Coupe. I picked it up today for $1500. Hopefully I will get some pictures up soon.

So heres a little info on the car.
1965 Coupe, was Irish Green, now some ugly green, can you say repaint! But the car is rust free and sooooo straight, it sould be an easy repaint. The car is totally stock, ecept that a PO tried to make it look newer by blackening out the horn grill, lettering, and deck grill. However, I have access to chrome parts. The interior was recarpeted with that felt domestic cut pile, and it has no trunk carpet, so I'm replacing it with the domestic loop. The floor pan was fixed a spot but, nothing serious. The original radio cut out is there, so I'm putting an original sterio in there (deals are being made) and putting my Blaupunkt CD player under the dash, as well as puting the speakers under the dash. The rear deck (interior) is being replaced, man I love having access to a zillion and one parts cars! Seats need to be reuphoulstered. The headliner is very nice as well as the one sunvisor, going to replace the other nonexistant one. Has a Dino steering wheel and 3 guages. The engine runs great, but the tranny has a first gear problem. Solution, replace it with another tranny with low gears (autox) and lobro cv joints. I'm doing this next week, and so the engine is being pulled, cleaned, and gaskets and such will be replaced. The engine has the rare stock solex air cleaners from the 65 (66-69 were different, I'll have pictures) The distributor is an 034????????? I've got a guy looking for an 031, got to get rid of that thing, mush be VW! The car has 4.5x15 steel wheels and the rubber needs to be replaced. Has the original jack, spare, and battery box, no trunk carpet though (was there originally trunk carpet?). The car needs work but is very solid, starts right up and idles beautifully, no throttle at all, and drives nicely. Right now, the goal is to have the interior fixed up, engine cleaned, tranny swapped, new paint, all chrome (non of that black stuff), and new seats by April, all under $1500. Can I do it.....You betcha I can.

Oh, and the car is going to be concoured, rallyed, and autocrossed, so watch out, I'm back!!!!!

034 ?? Hmm, where did that thing come from. Why not a 050 ? I have a 031 with no problems, but I read that the 050 was better.

Also, are you going to order new door panels or make the yourself ? I found the door panels very easy to make.

To answer bretts question, I'm thinking about reuphoustering the door panels myself as they look pretty simple and are plain, unlike the 68. The again, I'll probably end up reuphoustering the whole interior, its only vinyl. As for the 034, I've found an 031 as of last night and it is perfect. I love the 050, but I'm trying to go stock, and the 031 is a perfect distibutor for a stock 912.

Now here comes the fun part! My top end rebuild kit was ordered this morning and is coming into Barts parts in Bakersfield this evening. Do you know what that means.......this perfect running motor is coming out during the tranny swap and I'm going to take it apart! What an addiction! I'm going to replace all of the seals, check the rings, and so what ever needs to be done, or what ever I think could be done, hehehehe. Going to clean everything up, replace the sound padding, and hopefully have a pretty spiffy looking tranny and engine. Ahh, I love owning a 912 once again!

Can't you hear the gears turning inside Josh's head right now? I wonder how long it that 912 will last before the 1720 kit, doing the suspension, brake upgrades, paint...

I had a shop sew two different types of vinyl together for that 68 look(almost). Plain on bottom, perforated on top. The back panels were not as easy
