Headlight Woes
Just recieved my headlight retainers from Performance Products today. Turns out the VW style requires drilling! Needless to say, the box is packed and is being shipped off on Monday. As soon as I get a refund, I'm going to order the H4 kit. I was just going to replace the sealed beam with an H4 bulb (which I have, $17 a piece at CB Performance) but now I'm going to replace the whole unit with the euro style. Its cheaper than the replacement units ($140 w/o headlight!) and has better lghting. And since my old units are in desperate need of replacement. euro H4's are my best bet.

Hey Josh
Is that headlight thing hard to do ? Will the generator be able to keep up, or just melt in place ? Total cost $$$ Boy, I could use more light. Most of the time I run with my hi/brites on with no one ever flashing back. Brett 68912 |

Switching to H4s is easy to do. BTW Whenever you move to a higher wattage headlight, same style or not, it is a good practice to install a relay as the stock setup runs full power through the headlight switch. The switch is easy to burn out and $ to replace. With relays installed only the relay power runs through the switch. Stock genset will power even the brightest lights (within reason) when wired correctly. Just don’t run high beams, radio, blower, rear defrost, and the sunroof motor at the same time while at idle.
![]() Dim lights might be as simple as the light fuses. There is one fuse for each light high and low. Easy to check, (Disconnect the battery!) and using a fine wire brush carefully clean each fuse contact and fuse end. The aluminum fuses oxidize due to galvanic reaction and create resistance. Many electrical components have been purchased and replaced due to AL fuses. Copper costs 3 times as much but when you can find them are well worth it. |
