firing order and which location on cap?
I may have gotten the plug wires mixed up on distributor....anyone know which wire goes where?

I think it is 009 distributor...if that matters...probably not.

Check out this link for firing order, piston number, and other useful tidbits.
Number one on your distributor will correspond to the TDC mark on your distributor body (usually a small line on the top flat portion). From there work your way around in the firing order, 1-4-3-2, in the direction of travel for the rotor (clock-wise I do believe). Dave's 912 site |
009 is one of the worst distributors for you car. Next would be the 050. The only ones that work the best are the 022, 031, and RSR0012.
The 009 and 050 were actually made for the VW bug engines. Has the wrong curves. |

0012 is a good distributor for the 912; there are shops that can take your 009 and rework it to 0012. I had mine done by John Benton at Benton Performance: Benton Performance | Porsche 900 Series and 356 Service and Restoration . Cost was $125.

Thank you ....but I am in Hawaii...I got it all together and running....It seems pretty fast....but backfires a little at idle. I want to do the timing but have never done it on a 66 912...also not sure but it seems if it is running either lean or rich...

0012 new should cost around $220? Ditch the 009 as Jaems started. Will run (not as well as it should) but the wrong advance

If Benton will recurve your 009 it is worth having the car down for the time it takes to send it Stateside for this to be done.
You'll have an easier time setting the idle and everything in between. Right now your car feels slightly more powerful than a VW. When you put an RS0012 in you will have true Porsche power. Trust me, you won't believe the difference, even if your motor is stock. |
