Front Suspension Hardware

Does anyone happen to know what size bolts are needed for the crossmember support braces on the front suspension of a pre '69 912? I just noticed that they are missing on my car and can't seem to find any details about them in shop manuals or parts catalogs.

Thanks,
Andrew

If you mean the reinforcing cross member brace. M 12X1.5 65 lb/ft for the cross member and for the brace M16X1.5 47 lb/ft

It goes through the hole in the crossmember brace below, and the torque wrench setting for it should be 34 lb/ft I just don't know what size it is.

34 lb/ft is M10.

I also see it in the same 912 book as you have as M10 but it doesen't say how long it is. Get some long ones and cut to length would be one way and check the depth of the hole would be another. Nut lock them in. It is somewhat common to find them missing.

Thanks green, they are M10x20 and use a 17mm socket. Now here's another question for you guys. How big of a deal is it to be driving the car without a protection plate (black plate pictured below that bolts on to the crossmember braces) attached to the suspension? Before I knew it was missing it never posed any problems, but now that I know it isn't there it has me worried. Especially since it's supposed to be protecting the master brake cylinder and fuel lines which are now exposed. I was just wondering if any of you drive without one, or if it's something that really should be on the car.
Thanks,
Andrew
