912 Floorpan Restoration
A Guten Tag from Berlin
![]() This weekend I removed most of the sticky damping material from the floorpans of my ´65 912. It was a mess to remove all this bitumen, hair, glue primer mixture. The floors have been in factory condition and the glue was still sticking like on the first day .While removing the "dirt" I started to think about what I would discover............ I expected that there might be some welding experience right after the "dirt" experience........ But I was suprised: The first third in the legroom was slightly brown - but only surface rust........ ( I already removed most of it)...... The second and third section appeared to be nice an shiny without any corrosion so far........ I was so happy when the first part of bare metal "opened up" __Question follows__

Wow! That sure did clean up nicely. My 68 had a floor pan simular to what you had, a little more rust, a lot less surface rust. I used a primer on both sides, and then put rubberized undercoating on the bottom. Seemed to work fine. However, do not glue the carpet down, and I recommend minimal or no insulation, if your car leaks. I had 200 lbs. of water sitting on my floorboard when I took the carpet out.
Love that stereo! Last edited by josh912; 01-21-2002 at 08:46 AM.. |

In the US there is a company that sells a rust inhibiting coating that I have had real good results with. Hirsch Automotive products 1-800-828-2061 H.A.P. sells a material called “Miracle paint” stupid name but it works very well, sets fast and hard as baked enamel. I think you might be able to find a rust inhibiting paint a little closer to home as well.
I have what looks to be the same radio from my 69 912. Also included was an optional factory booster amp that, if I remember correctly, puts out a whopping 5 watts. It has a mechanical station seeker as well. When you tick the station knob a motor turns it to the next clear station. The knob actually turns and automatically stops by itself. I found a modern radio that fits in the original holes and boxed the original puppy up. |

check out www.POR15.com I used one of their kits on a gas tank restoration as well as on those oh so familar floor pans...the paint is unbelievable and sounds similar to the results posted by green 912, nice enamel-like finish that should last the life of the car...best of luck!
