66 912 timing...how to?

My manual says to use a 12 volt trouble shooting light and set ignition 3 degrees before TDC .....NOT SURE what to connect the light to....?

this is refered to as "static timing"
the test light goes between the negitive on the coil and ground, points open and the test light illumintes.
set the engine to the desired setting, in this case 3* btdc on spark plug 1.
conect the test light
if the light is on, turn the distributor clockwise till it goes out. at the moment the light goes out you are there. you might want to go back and forth over that point to get it just right tighten the distributor and start her up

if you have a timing light with advance adjust you can check total advance by setting the light to 32*-35* and run the engine to 3000+ rpm and see what the light says

Thx ...I will try that.....she is starting to run pretty good...I want to switch out my 009 distributor.

You'll have a whole different motor when you switch out that 009.

find the 022 or 030, the 009 will hold your engine back and not let all that is porsche out of the motor.

The 022, and 030 if you can find them, that have been rebuilt, can be very expensive. I have the 030 and love it. However, I would suggest that you try for the RSR0012. They are easier to get from C&S P

ok ....my mind is set...
I am going to change out that 009 for an RSR 0012....wish me luck. ANY TIPS?

bluehawaii 09-07-2010 11:10 PM

I DID SET MY timing and so far so good ...going to adjust valves and check timing again ...I also adjusted points they were a little tight. It is idling pretty good ....cant wait to put in a new RSR 0012 distributor,,,see what that does,,,does it make a real noticeable improvement?
