Exhaust Valve Spring Tool??
Any recommendation for replacing the exhaust valve springs.....without breaking down the engine? Looking for the right tool. Thanks
Looks like I will have to build a compressor tool, but thanks for reading my post. Last edited by 67Nine12; 07-24-2010 at 08:40 AM.. Reason: New Information from mechanic |

That's a tough one. The only i way i did it was by cutting the old spring to remove it and then clamping the new one in a bench vice and safety wiring it compressed. Then i installed it in the head, put on retainer and keepers and then cut away the safety wire. A bit tricky but it worked out ok...

exhaust valve spring
Schlage makes an import valve spring compressor tool that I used to compress my springs when I cleaned/lapped that valves on my motor (when apart)
It has two bridge looking brackets that you could bolt to the rocker stand and use the lever supplied to compress the spring and remove the keepers...Use an adapter from your compression tester kit and run compressed air into that cylinder to hold the valve closed and then do your repair...I bought my tool from Mac Tools |

I did this on a friend's bug about 35 years ago. Seems to me we used an air hose with an adaptor screwed into the spark plug hole to keep the valve closed and a tool that attached to the rocker mounts with a lever to compress the spring. I've also heard of people doing this by threading rope into the cylinder and then turning the crank with a wrench to press up against the valve. Seems like a lot of the old time technologies have been lost to modern mechanics.
