M Logo Anyone know how to adjust points?

I have an 009 bosch on my 66 912....I put new points in and wonder if I even need to make any adjustments.

I would recommend that you find a different distributor. The 009 is the worst distributor for the 912 a long with the 050. the ones you should be using is the 022, 031, or RSR0012.

The following is how you would adjust points with a 912 engine. Then you will have to do timing when you are done:

No quesion is too dumb

Dwell angle is a measure of the duration of time that the primary circuit of the ignition system is closed to energize the primary windings of the coil. It expressed (and measured) in degrees of rotation of the distributor rotor, hence the use of the term "angle".

Blue,

The points should be set to .4mm/.016 ins and the dwell between 44 and 50 degrees. A decent dwell/tach-meter should set you back about 30-40 bucks. Dwell is more accurate than point gap but if your good with a feeler gauge you can get close. In order to read dwell, your points must open and close - if they are way off you won't get a reading. Remember that if you change point gap or dwell, it changes the timing. Changes in timing on the other hand do not affect dwell. This is why you set the gap/dwell first and then the timing.

That's a problem...the 009. Get the 0012 from Classic Speed Parts.

The Bosch 022, 031, and 061 will not be any cheaper. In fact the RS0012 is the cheapest of the four. The other three will be over twice as much.
