porsche 912 engine
I have a 1966 porsche 912 and was wondering if a vw engine will work?

If you are not going to use the correct engine. Then you will better off to use the Type 4 VW. You will need to find the tin from a 912E.

Yes you can, I'd agree w/ the type IV engine......

I used a type 1 vw engine in my 67 with no issues. Make sure to use the later model spring plate with out the washer. Tin work was not right I never drove to far for fear of over heating. You will need some kind of custom motor mount. Here's some pictures of mine.
