Hey everyone, first thanks to Josh912 for helping me figure out what engine is in my car. I've actually got two questions for you guys... The first question isn't so serious. Josh told me that I have an engine from a '69 912 in my '67 912. Recently I replaced the generator in the car and installed the small diameter generator. Now that I think about it I have no idea if the previous generator was the large or small diameter generator. If it was a '69 though It should have been the large generator right? I can't think of any reason why the previous owners might have converted to a smaller generator. Is it possible that I installed the wrong generator and still managed to make it fit? Is it possible that this could be bad for the car? Ok, here's the second question. Can anyone think of any reason why an engine's idle should suddenly drop from 1200 to 200 RPMs. I can't come up with anything. I'd been having a lot of fuel and carburetor problems and had assumed it was because of either fuel starvation or one of the carbs stopping working. The fuel system has been fixed, and both carbs were just rebuilt. I picked the car up this morning after having them rebuilt and it ran like a champ all day long, and the idle was constant. Tonight I started it and even after driving it a good bit the idle keeps falling to 200. If anyone has any ideas what might be causing this please let me know. Thanks, Andrew

First off, you should be fine with the generator. It seems to me that the smaller generator wouldn't fit the generator stand, but if it fits good and the fan doesn't rub the shroud, which you would definately hear, you should be fine. As for the rpms, welcome to the world of 009. Upgrading to an 050 would almost definately solve the problem, and the engine will run a lot better.

It's possible that you have a '69 engine with a '67 generator pedestal. It's just held on with four bolts and would allow for the small diameter generator to fit properly.

The engine number is on the case. The pedestal is mounted directly above the engine number and "Made In Germany" on the case.

It does look like the pedastal is removable, and the serial number is below it. Oh well, who knows, as long as the generator charges the battery I guess I shouldn't worry or complain about it. My main concern was that things would somehow fit improperly or that the fan would be out of balance. I haven't heard any strange noises coming from the generator or fan though. I have noticed that the generator light goes out about 200-300 RPMs higher than with my old generator (maybe it was the larger generator), but it goes out and doesn't come back on. I ordered a .050 distributor, hopefully that will cure the dropping idle speeds. I'm glad that didn't sound like a major problem! Thanks guys.
