What engines can I put in a 1966 912? 911?
Hi, I am looking at mabey buying a 1966 912 but it has a major problem- a VW bug engine... I am new to 912s and I need to know what engines I will be able to drop in and use with the stock transmission. Which ones will give me the best power and reliabitlity for the money?? Will a newer model 911 engine work? Any advice and information is greatly appreciated. thanks.

Welcome to the forum...Hope the rest of the car is worth the effort.
912 and 911 engines are mostly interchangeable. Different mounts and minor electrical differences. Go with whatever you find at the right $. On a different angle has anyone seem a 912 911 conversion to electric power ? Or even a VW bug converted ... |
yah there was a 914 I saw in Seattle that was an electric conversion, But it was weak, and couldnt travel very far in one outing.

You could put a type 4 (914) engine in it. Or even a V-8. I know of one with a rotary.

Best bet is to go with a 912 engine :D which is a rather nice performer I might add. The 911 motor will fit but as mentioned it has different mounts and wiring. But here's the kicker, you have to install an external oil tank as they are dry sump motors.

I've looked into the 911 engine transplant quite extensivly. As mentioned, new rear motor mounts (available from Porsche for under $200), a 911 external oil tank (a hole has to be cut inside the engine compartment), if you go with a newer than '69 911 engine, ie 2.2, 2.4 or 2.7L, you will have to bolt a 65-69 clutch/flywheel to your motor, wiring conversion (not too difficult) and some small stuff, a 911 tach, 911 throttle linkage etc. It can be done and you are in the right place to ask the questions.
The easiet conversion to do will be to convert it back to a 912. I have seen engines for auction on ebay. Let us know how you make out. |
I might have one for sale soon.

I installed a 69 911 T engine which was the lowest bhp of the 911 engines at 110. After sourcing the parts it probably took me a day and a half to cut out the old mounts, weld in 911 mounts, fit oil tank, fit electric fuel pump, build up a new loom and fit the engine. Then just get a 6cy tach and 912 temp sender and your ready.
If you do go down this avenue and you need any help just drop a mail to the list. BUT,,, if I had an option and I could get hold of a 912 motor I would advice that you fit that. I "may" have a really good 69 motor for sale in a few weeks, but then I am in England. I've attac a pic of my previous 912 motor. HTH Alan.UK |
ok ya'll, I have an upright T-4 and finally found a rear motor mount/bar from a 912E to install the engine in a 66 912. What I have run into is the mount is a full 10" longer(wider) than the original mount/bar. Where do I go with the mounts?...do I cut them out of the stock location and re-weld or an I missing something here that is a lot easier?

Here's a copy of the 912E rear mount assy. The inset shows the welded-on factory receivers. (Sorry about the lousy scan.)

thanks Wayne...looks like I need additional out-board mounts.
