Porsche Colors
Hey everyone,
Well, I've finally gotten my car mechanically sound, and I'm starting to think about painting it. Deciding what color to paint it is infintely more difficult than I thought it would be though. I'd like to try to paint it a color that would be original for a '65-'69 car. Unfortunately it isn't very easy to see all of the different colors available on early 911s and 912s. I've tried looking at photos online, but no two pictures of the same color seem to be exactly the same. I was wondering if anyone knows of a book, website, or something that has really good pictures of all of the original colors. Thanks, Andrew |

The best way is to go to a local auto paint supplier and ask to see the book/chips for your particular year. Look at them in sunlight, if possible. Unless your car was originally a color you just can't live with (Porsche managed to include several of these in the mid 60's) it's always a good idea to stay with orig.

Unfortunately my car was an original color that I really couldn't live with, so I won't be keeping it the original, actually it hasn't been the original color for 15 years. I've been looking at paint chips, the only problem is, for me, it's really hard to tell what the color is going to look like without actually seeing it on a car. Right now the car is Tangerine (6809) I think I may just have it repainted that color because I know I can live with it, it really doesn't look that bad, and not too many people have that same color.

Tangerine! Get used to kids sticking those little Sunkist labels on your fenders! Well, at least it's not that peacock blue or lime green or signal yellow. I realize that some love these colors, but it's a matter of personal taste. When it comes to these "autobahn safety colors" I think that even Dr. Porsche would give his blessing to a color change. Since it's your $$, it might as well be a color you like. (Remember, for years Porsche offered the "paint to match sample" option.)

Tangerine's not that bad... Actually, my car is fairly faded and has primer spots in a lot of places, but when the sun hits it and all of the chrome is shining it really looks sharp. I decided to extend my choice of colors up to '73 so I'm trying to decide between Tangerine, Bahia Red, Aga Blue, and I'm trying to find out what some of the other blues looked like. BTW, if anyone has any pictures of their car or other porsches in any of these colors, I'd really appreciate seeing them. I think the brighter Tangerine and Red look really nice especially with Fuchs wheels, but the darker blues are really nice subtle colors...
