912 Newbie - Two Forums, No Waiting

Been looking for a while and recently added a 1968 912 Coupe to the stable. Found the car locally in Florida, but it has spent most of its formative years in Kansas. Originally Burgundy but now white. 70,500 miles with pretty complete service/repair history. New clutch, recent valve and carb adjustment and it pulls pretty good.

Using the car to teach my teenage daughters how to drive a stick and as another weekend car. If the car shakes out over the next couple months might take it to the track or autocross it. Car is 1000 pounds lighter than my 964 and it is a blast to drive. Noisy as hell, smells like gas, the seats are ancient and the steering wheel is huge, but what an absolute joy and the kids think it's "cute".

Look forward to meeting any 912 Pelicans in Florida and if any of you want to get together for a drive or a tech session, let me know when and where!

Brandon

Ditch the sideview mirrors and your there !

I'm looking for a pair of large Durants, but they don't go cheap. Also might be looking at seats that are correct but provide some support. Yesterday looked at removing the front bumper guards, but it looks like you might have to pull the washer fluid reservoir to get at the bolts for the driver's side bumper guard. Is that right?

jknapp3 03-13-2011 05:28 AM

I'll trade you my Durants for the ones in the pic. I don't know if they're small or large though? I don't have them on the car. I'll get a pic later for ya. I don't like then, to hard to see out of.
Let me know if interested.

The overriders are bolted to the front bumper, which is one piece. They are remove from underneath the car or after you remove the bumper.

The mirrors on my car are 10 footers. They are plastic and a little on the flimsy side. They do adjust and you can actually see out of them. Not sure if they use the original mounting holes. I'll take some close up photos for you to look at.

jknapp3 03-13-2011 09:36 AM

Ok, I can get those locally for like $20.00 But I still have a set of mirrors, I'll get pics today, and hell just make a half a$$ offer. They're just sitting on a shelf in the shop. I'm not going to use them.

Brandon-FL 03-13-2011 11:25 AM

PM sent with an offer on the mirrors.

The more time I spend with the car, the more I like it.

When I picked up the car I noticed that the driver's seat back sagged badly to the right. Today, I took the seat out, cleaned and oiled the recliner mechanism, compared operation to the passenger seat which feels correct. After an hour of tinkering and not finding anything loose or broken, my daughter said "maybe it's just bent." Put the seat back in, couple of good tugs and good as new.

Clock wasn't working when I picked it up and figured it was a goner. When cleaning out the trunk I checked the fusebox and found the #2 fuse pulled. Bingo, clock, lighter and dome lights working.

Keep it simple stupid!

My clock died years ago, so I gutted it, and converted it... here's pics.
Questions, ask...

Have all you Floridians (?) registered your 912s at 912vin.com?

BryanM 03-14-2011 07:02 PM

yes. a while ago

Brandon-FL 03-15-2011 02:03 AM

Yep. Added my info to the database over the weekend and submitted 912 Registry membership also. Looking forward to access to the Wiki and the Registry magazine/newsletter.

I was going to add the engine number and transmission number on the 912vin.com site, but I wasn't sure where those numbers are stamped. Was told by PO that is is a numbers matching car, but is there any way to confirm this other than ordering a COA from Porsche?

Jaems 03-15-2011 09:36 AM

If the engine and transaxel are with in the following ranges then the chances are that they are original to the car. However, only the Kardex knows for sure.

The engine number will start with a 108xxxx or a 128xxxx depending on if it Euro delivery or US respectively, for 68.

The trans will start with the same series of numbers 108xxxx if 4 speed, 128xxxx if 5 speed.

Forget wiki

Don't get your hopes up for wiki. It hasn't worked for years.

Hey Brandon
I've just bought a cream one as well.... I've dropped a 3.2 into her. Power is fantastic. Otherwise stock / concourse. Will post some pics when it's finished in a few weeks.
