Transmission 912e

Hi,
Today when leaving work I couldn't shift the car from neutral into first. I kept grinding. Rather than forcing it, I shut the car off, put it into gear, started the engine and started driving. Then the car was fine. No problems going into first or any other gears. Does anyone know what would cause this? Thanks for your help!
Jay

sounds like you need a new clutch. The new one in our car made a big improvement.

I would think this symptom is indicative of a worn first gear syncro.

A well known 915 tip is to shift into second, or any other gear, before going into first. I find this is especially effective in the instant right before coming to rest. Then, while at rest in second gear, the transition into first is much easier. It is a technique that took a while to make habit, but one that has made operation of my car much easier.

Also, upon starting the car, you can do the same thing. If your reverse engagement causes a similar problem, try selecting a forward gear before selecting reverse as you back out of your space.

Best regards,

David
