912 rear trailing arm issues

I went through a new pair of rear tires in less than 5000 miles. The tread on the inside half of both rear tires was completely gone. I bought a new set of tires and took the car to a very knowledgable shop (i.e. expensive) to have it checked out and adjusted. The problem was very slight damage to both control arms which prevents attaining proper toe-in for the rear wheels. The adjustment bolt could not compensate for the damage. The mechanic sees quite a few old 911/912s and he said it is not uncommon for one or both control arms to get damaged over the years. I am now looking for a another set but will probably not know if they are good until I get them in the car and have the alignment adjusted again (not a job I'm looking forward to, btw). Anyone ever had a similar problem?

Yes, it's a known issue.

I once heared an estimate that 50% of the arms had issues.

The best shops have a rig to test for alignment....

arms

The steel arms bend. The factory makes a fixture to check them. I have the LWB fixture

You'd think 911s would have this issue more frequently than 912s (considering the added weight and torque). Anyone know of a shop in the NY Metro area that can check trailing arms?
