Advise please from the 912ers

I bought a 76 912e today and it has no engine in it. It did come with all the accesaries including the complete injection system, fan and housing and mounts. There is no flywheel or clutch nor is the long block there. What are my options if staying on the cheap side. What VW motors are easily used 1.8, 2.0 ? What are the differences with the 2.0 bus motor.

ooohhh!!! i want it! i want it!

i love 911/912's without motors...i dunno...it gets me going...mind if i ask how much you paid?

well..your options are totally open...anything from VW's to 911 or even all the different 912's (good luck finding the 912E though!) good motor though...i'd probably either go with a VW type 4 (simplist way out)

or..dare i say it...water cool it

thats up to you..i'd like to see something other than a v8 or v6 in there....

hey! the thing has no motor! better to water cool it than to scrape a perfectly good body!

bring on the flames!!

Type 4. Stay away from square port bus heads, or you'll have a nightmare for exhaust on your hands. If you want to use the original FI, that's cool, but more power can be had with a set of Webers or Dellortos. You could sell the FI for some good money. You can get a lot of horsepower cheaply and reliably from those engines.

If you do not have the exhaust you're in for a treat. Thermal reactors and bypass pipes are easy to locate, But if you do not have the heat exchangers, you're screwed. Custom fabrication will be your only alternative.

The t-IV vw motors are almost alike, but porsche has the following differences:

1. Windage tray
2. Oil filler and dipstick from the top
3. 2.0L has different pistons (compression is higher, bus pistons will work)
4. 2.0L heads have spark plugs in different angles and intake is 3 bolt instead of four. And they love to crack.

Good luck on your search. Do a search on this board and there is a wealth of information in past posts.

74/75/76 Euro 2.7 RS MFI Replica! Lightweight 912E and no reason not to build up a 911 engine for her.

I don't know how are the legal constraints in New York, but here in California you would have to keep in mind that a 912E, being newer than 1973, needs to pass a smog inspection every other year and after changing owners. Hence, you may want to check if you will need all the smog stuff in the new engine you choose.

Not a problem here in new york but even better I am a state inspector and I own a inspection machine.
