What's the fastest you've driven the 912?

Alright, fess-up time. Lets hear how fast, where, when, and your drivers license number. To get the ball rolling, 115 mph (actual) on a 2 lane highway durring rally. The car could have easily gone faster, but street signs tend to get a little blurry at that speed, and there was one about every mile. Needless to say, we made up the time!

Disclaimer: I was the navagator.

Oh, and no fish stories.

Yeh, it was 40 below and I hopped into my stock 912. It started right up and I drove off, without even letting it warm up. The roads were icey, so I was able to I get the car up to 145 mph, thanks to the ice and the wind. The car was on its second time around the tach when I passed a cop. He tried to keep up, but he got sideways on the ice. I would have gone fasteer, but the distrbutor started to cut out, stupid rev limiter. But then my girlfriend got out on the the back of the car (at 145 mph) and put in my spare 050 and I got the car up to 190 mph. Man, I was flying past those 996 twin turbos. Before I knew it I was in South America! When I stopped for gas, for some reason the speedo was stuck. Seems as if it got stuck at 110 on its second pass. Now that was a trip!

pjv911 03-12-2002 07:22 PM

I recentely brought my 68` up to 100mph and let off because i didnt want to hold the revs for so long. I think it had quite a bit more to go but as it was it took a long stretch of road to get to 100. Would have needed another 1/4 mile or so to get that extra 20mph. I do drive at 80mph daily and thats at 4200rpm. Ouch!!

Kurt

P.S. its almost spring and time to start driving the R/S CLONE. THAT ONE WILL GO 140+mph.

Jeff Trask 03-12-2002 07:30 PM

About 115 MPH. That's at redline on a stock motor with a Bursch, K&N's and an .050 distributor. Targa roof in place.

mein12 03-12-2002 07:42 PM

Hi Josh,

With street motor, about 128 mph on open highway near Taft during an into the night rally back in 92'. If there had only been a good tail wind.

Keep the shiny side up! JMB

Kiwi912 03-12-2002 11:25 PM

About 2mph backwards off a tow truck into my garage!!! When it arrived here from the States mid 2001!! Engine wasn't running but I was making BRMM! BRMMM! noises!!! Maybe if it had an 050 I could have got 3mph out of her??!!

Can't wait to get it running and find out what it'll do!!!
Within the Law of course!!!

Waiting, waiting!!!!

A ways past an indicated 120 on two occasions; the 2 south between La Crescenta and Glendale (at 3 a.m., with a Z 5th gear, 205/55/16 tires) and on the 5 north on the way to Buttonwillow for a VARA race (X 5th gear, 195/60/15 tires). Stock motor.

Of course, later on,the trip to Buttonwillow, I got busted for going 90. Cop was at the end of a transition ramp, pointing the radar gun up the hill. I was the last car in line. I never had a chance. http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/burn.gif

I bury the needle on the front straight at Summit Point with each pass. The speedo goes to 120 and the needle moves to a point that would be 125 if it were printed on the dial. I am on the gas for a good 5 seconds after it stops moving as well but who knows how accurate the thing is at full-scale deflection. Regardless of how fast the top speed is I have more fun going 90 on VIRs back esses than any straight. That’s no BULL! ;)

Are there any other 912 track rats out there?

120 miles a hour in a 30 year old car is to much for me, 85 or 90 is about it, besides I can always use the excuse that up here in Mendocino theres really not a stretch of road way long enough and straight to do that. Interstate 5 is a windy two hours away. Good luck to all you speedsters.
Happy motoring,
Chas
ps What's a ticket cost for going twice the legal limit?

bmjanow 03-13-2002 05:28 PM

Only in the mid 80's, but take a look at the web site and you can see just how scary that was. I didn't know just how bad the rust really was at that time. It will run again though, it's just a matter of time.

cbbest 03-13-2002 05:44 PM

95 was fast enough for me.

Since we're on the topic of reckless driving...

I had the "job" of driving around a 427 Cobra (replica, of course) for a week last January in Orlando. Promotional thing. Nasty, nasty car. Absolutely should not be legal. 120+ on several occasions. Can't be sure of the exact speed as the windshield becomes just a decoratation after 50 mph...

What makes this even scarier is the average speed around Orlando is about 8mph city, 22mph on the highways...!

At the century mark my 912E starts to feel a bit "light" as though it wants to "lift"...last year my insurance agent told me that these days anyone caught doing over 100 mph in CA is subject to a mandatory jail term.

I have not been able to confirm this however with all the felony car chases that occur on CA freeways I would have believe that this is an accurrate statement.

105 about 1 month ago, I was testing the RPM vs Speed curves in the owners manual.

Dual Webers, 009........YES 009 distributor, Bursh exhuast and stock air filters.

I felt I could have easily pushed it to 110-115 but 101 in this area is crowded.

Oh yea the Beemer and Mercedes people were pissing me off so I had to blow by a couple of them too!

It was about 15 years ago, at 2am on the 55 freeway in Orange County. The only time I can remember that there was no one else on the freeway that I could see. I reached an indicated 118ish....had the accelerator on the floor, running 5500rpms...couldnt go any faster. At the time, the engine (2nd rebuild) had about 150K on it, all stock, except for the 009 distributor  (I know better now...). Anyway, I only had it that speed for a few seconds....felt like Scotty from Star Trek was sitting next to me saying "I can't hold her together much longer Captain!"....

LOL!!

Used to hit 125 on the front straight at SIR during vintage races and PCA driver's ed.

I used to hit : 110 MPH on a Mexican Highway @ 8:30 AM with : Bursch Exhaust , Webers , K & N Filters and .050 dist. Then my copilot started to feel nervous cause we were in a 30 year old car.

My 65 912 was only about a year old at the time and I hit 120 +or- on many occasions on the German autobahns near Frankfurt, Mannheim, Stuttgart, etc.,on French highways, Italian Autostrada and about any other place with an open left lane. Only crashed once near Monaco going into Ital, trying to pass a slow truck on a twisty shoreline road. Minor damage and was repaired by a good German shop. Oh, the things we do when young and brave and Viet Nam brewing. Still have the car with original paint - soon to be refreshed!

I've been past 90 in mine, and it was plenty. the subaru motor was still pulling hard, and I didn't realize how fast/hard it pulled as I was merging into traffic and passing everyone on I-85N in atlanta (where they all do 80 anyway.

on the 912 engine, I've been into the upper 80's.
