What's this 912 worth?
Got a lead on a '66 912, and was wondering what a reasonable offer would be to make on it. It seems like it's had all the work done on it that usually sucks up the most money, and doesn't appear to need much else done on it except new seat covers, although I haven't seen it in person yet. Here's the info I got from the owner:
New brakes (fully rebuilt calipers, new brake lines, new pads, turned rotors ) New Koni shocks (Boge style strut inserts) in the front, used but very nice Koni shocks in the rear. New Tires. New headlights. 914 steering wheel Professionally replaced front suspension pan with factory reproduction sheet metal replacements. Gas tank has been pulled, cleaned and painted. New Fuel lines from gas tank to carbs. New Interstate battery. New aftermarket factory style rear view mirror (drivers side only). All Chrome and glass is perfect, or darn close. Very good weather stripping, no leaks. Original carpet in front trunk and cabin interior. Replaced front hood latch. New front trunk shocks (not installed) Engine professionally rebuilt by Soren Anderson ( I HAVE ALL RECORDS) who specializes air cooled Porsche machine work and building. Specs are: 1720cc graphite coated cast pistons with biral cylinders from AA. New cam ground to an Elgin spec 280 degree with .330" lift by Ariel (formerly with Cal Cams). Heads completely gone through and rebuilt, all runners cleaned up and lightly polished. Crank polished, new main bearings, flywheel surfaced, new sachs clutch disc and pressure plate. Cases were replaced with a '69 core which has a solid mount oil cooler 1969 style motor mount New clutch cable and housing. Entire engine bay steam cleaned, sanded and painted with two part epoxy paint containing 72% solids All engine sheet metal has been hot-tanked, sandblasted, and powder coated 70% black. Weber IDF 40's fully serviced and tuned Factory exhaust sandblasted and painted with POR 15 Factory Manifold Gray. New Voltage Regulator. New starter. New RSR 0012 distributor from CSP. New Fan belt. Heater boxes and valves serviced (also hot-tanked and sandblasted), new heater cables. ![]() ![]() |

Thanks. Now, is that what you would offer, or what you think it's worth (i.e. appraised value)? I generally try to buy vehicles under market value if I can, and care more about making a wise investment than strictly owning the vehicle.

Lane is a little on the low end. However, cars were a little cheaper in the Portland area. Due to some rusting. If the car is as good as he says. And there is virtually no rust any where. There are some up grades that would make the price a little lower. However, that said it would be more like the 18-20K range. If he had all the original parts and they were in good shape it could be higher. This was what they were going for about year and a half. I haven't check the market recently.
Just check car well for rust everywhere in all the usual places. The color is not the best. With that said there are some that love that color but a somewhat limited group. Any of the the standard Porsche colors like Polo Red, black, white, Aga Blue, Irish Green, and etc. will have more of interest and would/could demand a higher price. |

So if I can get it for under 12k, it would be a pretty good deal, then?

If everything checks out AND there isn't a ton of rust, 12K would be a great deal.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I'm looking at it tomorrow morning. Apparently it belongs to the guys son who's out of the country at school, so I think I might be able to get it down to 11k. I'll let you know if I get it and post some pictures.

With so much things done to that car. It would be a steal if you can get it under 12K. I was looking at two different '66 912 one priced at 10K which needed tons of work and the other at 20k that has similar things fixed. They 10K guy wanted 9.5K and wouldn't budge. In the end I negotiated for the 20k car and paid 15K for my red '66.
