Wheelbase change....
Yesterday I was reading in GT Racing’s Catalog and ran across the following statement - “To convert to a 911 R replicar you must have a short wheelbase 911. This type of 911 was produced up to 1968. One other choice would be the 1972 911. This was the only year that the factory produced the 911 with an external oil tank filler... just like the 1967 911 R. However you must change the rear trailing arms and rear banana to an early car to shorten the wheelbase."
Does this mean to lengthen the wheelbase on the early cars you can change the trailing arms and banana arm to one from a later car? Is it that simple? I ask because I have access to a ’75 911 that’s totaled (hit in the front & no engine) and a 1967 912 parts car that’s already missing it’s front fenders, rear ¼’s, rear suspension. Will the 911’s rear suspension bolt in giving me the longer wheelbase so I could use late model fenders/bumpers etc.? Any input appreciated.... |

Hi Scott,
I don't know much about this, but I know it has been done. I've seen it on several cars and read about it before. It may be worth doing a further search on the web and also ask the 911 chat list. HTH Alan.UK ![]() |

What really makes me wonder if it is that easy to change , then why do you see things like this?
This is a 1966 912 that was on eBay recently. Don't remember if it sold or not, but they claimed to have some $12000 into the car. It had VW Type 4 power and had obviously been updated to the '74-89 look as well. Sharp car other than the rear wheels are too far forward for the wheel openings.... |
