I've got troubles shifting my 1968 912 4speed. The first trip on the road after brining it out of winter storage had me grinding into first gear on downshifts. On upshifts, or from a stop, it goes into first gear, and all others, including reverse, with no problems, no grinding at all. When down shifting though, I have to hold the clutch in for 3 seconds or so (an eternity), till things stop grinding before I can slide it into first.
I have played with the gearshift linkage, but it was 4 years ago. I don't recall troubled shifting when I put it in storage. A previous owner told me he installed a short shift kit on it. It feels short, in my opinion, all my experience is with beetles though. Is there an easy fix, or do I have transmission trouble? |

Common first gear syncro. The best thing to do is not downshift into first when moving. Infact, its highly recommended that you don't. But, if you can't resist, double clutch. I definately wouldn't worry about it though. Not a reason to rebuild the tranny.
