912 dizzy install help please!

I 'm very new to 912 engines so please bear with me.

I'm having trouble with the orientation of the dizzy.

at #1 TDC the slot in the dist hole seems right. across the car and with the small crescent to the rear.

when I install the 031 dizzy, the rotor is pointing at about 11 o'clock. then I orient the dist body so the notch in the edge matches the rotor.

install the cap and connect the wires, all good. but.........

in all the pics I see the wires for cylinders 1 and 2 are next to each other on the right hand side of the dist. the only way this could be is if at #1 TDC the rotor is pointing opposite to mine, about 5 o'clock.

does this make sense? any thoughts? thanks, Don.

Hello Don, had a similar problem. pretty new my self. my distributor is 022. not should be the same. your distributor body appears to be facing the forward. rotate the body so that the tiny notch is facing rear toward no. 2 cylinder (rear pass side). remove spark plug find when top dead center using flexible tube or straw. rotor should line up with the notch on body of dizzy. from there adjust yer timing. good luck.

Ok. here's the deal. engine runs fine. got it timed perfectly. but..............

at TDC on the pulley, the rotor is pointed to 11 o'clock, at the notch in the dist housing.

but, I've got the #1 plug wire on the dist cap post opposite to that, at 5 o'clock. then wires in firing order clockwise from there.

#2 piston is at bottom dead center, which would put #1 at TDC but it's a pain to get to.

this doesn't make sense. anyone? it does seem I have a 356 dist, would that make a difference?

It looks like you're 180° out: in the second photo the 'small crescent' looks to be facing towards the front of the engine/car.

looks likes your distributor is still out180 deg. do you have the 912 handbook? really helped me. . take a look at some previous post, on both issues. heres a picture hopes this helps. good luck...

got it. I never claimed to be smart. while at work today, it suddenly popped into my head. the pulley wheel TDC mark is on the #1 ignition point every second revolution. somehow, in the 3 or 4 times I set it up, I was always at the #1 TDC before the intake stroke.

got home, had supper ( lasagna), then took off the dist cap, turned rotor to the index mark with the pulley at TDC, then rotated the pulley one full revolution, rotor now pointing at 5 o'clock, rotated dist body to put the index mark at 5 o'clock as well, replace cap and re-sequence plug wires, fire it up and re-set timing. all good.

thanks for all the help. it got me thinking in the right direction. I'm a newbie all over again with this four-banger business.;)
