Exhaust pipe very hot...

Hi,

I got my rebuilt 68 912 engine to fire up nicely, but after rev up to about 2500 rpm for 5 minutes I noticed that the exhaust pipe.. specifically the one that bolted to #2 cylinder head (right rear) got very hot. The black paint on the pipe from this area is peeled off completely, leaving an unpainted, bare metal pipe.
This hot area of the pipe is from the POINT where the 2 bolts attached the pipe to the #2 cylinder head and extend out ABOUT 8". While the opposite side, where the exhaust pipe mounted to the #4 cylinder head (left rear) seems to be normal..since the black paint on the pipe seem fine, no peeling off.
The question is, why is the pipe from the #2 head got so hot, that the paint came off?? is this normal? what is normal temp?? or something else needs to be check out?

Thank you,
Bao

Your number two cylinder is running leaner than the number four. Could be a clogged jet but you need more data since it could also be unbalanced carbs. Check the synchronization (air flow) between cylinders two and one. If they are the same then check and adjust three and four to match one and two. If air flow is the same, then adjust mixture screws with a dwell tachometer for max RPM one cylinder at a time. If no luck, look for a clogged jet.
