165/80x15 is somewhat hard to find. Kuhmo makes that size in their "Powerstar" series. I got some at Tire Rack online for $36 ea plus shipping in 2005. Lately they don't list them but Americas Tire store has them now for $82 each.
Get Kumho 165/80-15 Tires at Discount Tire - Discount Tire/America's Tire

If you want to spend big Coker Tire has correct Michelin XZX, closest thing to original equipment Michelin X, but they cost $208 per plus shipping, balance and mounting.

I chose these as I figured they were as good as the Kuhmos. Paid $250 for 4 at my door, an additonal $80 for mount and balance.

If you can get the Kuhmos at a local Americas Tire/Discount tire retailer for $82 each mounted and balanced that would be the way to go. They did not have them available when I was shopping a few months ago.

A lot of air-cooled VW folks having the very same issue. The web site TheSamba.com :: Volkswagen Classifieds, photos, shows, forums, and information has had threads on the availability of 165R15 tires. The Kuhmo's are probably as good as your gonna get for quality vs price. Google Vredestein tire as I believe they still have the 165 available and this tire is european made! Other than Coker, $$$, would you consider a 195/65R15 tire? Same dia and plenty of options. What wheels do you have?
Hope this helps, Bill.

I'm not sure anyone wants to here this but, at a minimum it shows some support, A.J. Sims with the PRA quarter mile boys just mentioned a 165 class and I believe the sponsor is Nankang tires who has supplied a vw 165 tire for awhile.
