'68 912 quit.......

Hello-
Today took the 912 out to run some errands today and after about an hour + of starting, stoping, the car started to act like it was running out of fuel at a stop sign. As I added gas it cleared up but then about 4 miles later it started to backfire and just quit. It has an electric fuel pump and it is getting fuel. THe coil felt VERY hot. After I got my trailer and brought it home, it ran ok to get it into the garage. Where should I start? Points? I acted as if it was no longer getting a spark so I do not think its fuel pump related. I think if memory is correct it has the Bosch 050 dizzy, which I know some folks hate, some think its ok. I really DO NOT want to have to change it out for another. Could the coil be going bad? THe problem seems to be only showing up after the car gets hot...... Any help, thanks
Ed

Will try that, its a Bosch blue coil, and my guess is its at least 10+ yrs old. I do have another 12 volt coil from one of our British cars, (a Lucas gold coil, fairly new). Hope its as easy as that, not to worry, if thats the cause, a proper German coil will be on order......
Thanks

How do you know it is getting fuel? Debris clogging the outlet to the fuel tank exhibits very similar conditions as you are stating. Car runs fine for a while, then runs like a dog. Let sit for a while and it runs fine then turns into a dog. Clogged idle jets also make the car run like crap. When it is really hot out, old spark plug wires can cause running issues.

Where is your electric pump located?

Is the mechanical fuel pump still in the circuit?

Remove the fuel line upstream of the carbs and with the help of an assistant, run the car and discharge fuel into a container. Collect fuel for 1 min. measure the collected volume and then report back here.

If your plug wires are old and grimy, try removing them and cleaning then with CRC brake clean solvent.

FYI, the CRC red can brake clean is the same chemical formulation as their more expensive electrical component solvent. Nasty stuff either one, use outdoors.
